Let Me Hear You Roar!

To be a fly on the wall when I’m running on the treadmill early in the morning before work… it’s really quite a sight. Hair a mess, mismatched clothes, TLC’s “The Little People” on mute in the background (closed captioning on), iPod blaring the chosen tunes or podcast of the day.  Sometimes I listen to funny stuff and I literally LOL, sometimes I listen to my favorite tunes and end up singing (just a random word here and there, not a full on chorus… I am running after all!), sometimes (like today) I get so motivated by the lyrics of a song I start fist pumping the air!

I know you’re picturing this sight… and that’s ok. I’ll be vulnerable for the sake of your reading/imagining pleasure.

So here we are. Today.  Flipping through my playlists, seeing all the same songs, not sure what to land on.

Ehh not that one again.

Ugh this one’s too slow.

I’ll settle on this playlist.

A little old school, a little new school, a little trendy pop.

And then Katy Perry’s Roar comes on.

This song’s alright I thought, total breakup comeback song. Might as well leave it on.  I am completely and utterly a love struck, happily married woman, but who doesn’t love a good breakup song every now and again?

And after hearing it 100 times before, listening to it as a breakup song, for some reason I heard it totally different today.

Totally different.

Now let me just throw this little disclaimer in right here: I’ve been getting a little deep lately.  Thinking about my life.  The choices I’ve made to get where I am.  On paper: a dietitian, professor of nutrition, successful weight loser (you all know this).  In my heart:  someone who decided she wanted something different, something better, a life more full, a life full of passion (for my craft people, for my craft).

Back to the song. Me on the treadmill. Roar comes on.  And this time, the lyrics are totally different.

She’s not singing to her jaded ex-lover, she’s singing to herself (stick with me here people).

When she says “you” she’s actually singing to herself… a little self-talk let’s say.

It was almost as if I was singing the song to myself.

Here’s how it went…

I used to bite my tongue and hold my breath

Scared to rock the boat and make a mess

So I sit quietly

Agree politely

Yeah I used to bite my tongue before… scared to rock the boat… it was easier to go with my friends and eat fast food all the time, not exercise, not make my health a priority… yeah I did that, I held my breath and sat quietly…

I guess that I forgot I had a choice

I let you push me past the breaking point

I stood for nothing

So I fell for everything

Totally right… I didn’t stand for anything… not my health, not trying to be a better version of me… I guess I didn’t realize I had that choice… I let myself go; I let myself get to that breaking point thinking the healthy lifestyle/being fit/feeling confident was out of my reach…

You held me down but I got up

Already brushing off the dust

You hear my voice, you hear that sound

Like thunder, gonna shake the ground

Yeah you held me down… I held myself down. That weight… the physical weight and the mental weight of wanting to be something better, something more, CRAVING it!  I held myself down, but HELL YEAH I GOT UP!!!  You hear me right now; you hear my voice… That’s me about to shake things up and KILL this life that once felt like a dream!  You hear that thunder?  That’s me about to wreak havoc on my lifestyle, CHOOSE to do this, to make healthier choices, to live it, and shake things up!!

You held me down but I got up

Get ready ’cause I’ve had enough

I see it all, I see it now

Yeah I held myself down, but those days are DONE! I decided to get up ‘cause I had enough!  I can see it all!!  The career with purpose, the fire to help others, my own confidence, energy… I see it now!!

I got the eye of the tiger, a fighter

Dancing through the fire

‘Cause I am a champion

And you’re gonna hear me roar

HELL YEAH I have the eye of a tiger! I am a fighter!  I haven’t given up!  I chose this life.  I chose to push myself.  What got me here was definitely a dance through fire and I accepted that challenge.  I’m a champion for getting through it.  And you know what?  You WILL hear me roar… that’s what this is all about!

Louder, louder than a lion

‘Cause I am a champion

And you’re gonna hear me roar

You’re gonna hear me roar

At this point my fists are literally pumping the air… I am feeling on top of the world! I’m small on my treadmill… BUT MY ROAR IS MASSIVE!

Now I’m floating like a butterfly

Stinging like a bee, I earned my stripes

I went from zero

To my own hero

This part couldn’t be more perfect… I am floating like a butterfly… on the high of my choices… I earned it… got the stripes, but I’m still looking to add more… it’s a constant challenge… a lifestyle… I did start at zero, but I’m definitely not down there now.

Amen Katy Perry.  Amen!

I know she didn’t intend for this song to be about self-talk… about everyday people like us talking themselves through the challenges of getting healthy, losing weight, staying well… but today that’s how I heard the lyrics.  I doubt I’ll ever be able to hear it the other way again.

This will never be a breakup song to me again… This is my victory lap song now!

Now your turn:

I know you’ve had enough.

You’re dancing through the fire.

You are a champion at your own race.

Now let me HEAR YOU ROAR!!

Roar. Written by Katy Perry, Lukasz Gottwald, Max Martin, Bonnie McKee and Henry Walter
