What I Want to be When I Grow Up

So we’re standing there, my sister and I looking in the hallway mirror. You know those tall ones we used to all have on the back of a door somewhere?  My sister and I are about 2 years (and equivalent heights) apart, so we could both see ourselves if we stood back a ways… one layered on top of the other like a totem pole.

Carolyn says “When I grow up, I want to be a horse!”

“I want to be a baseball game when I grow up” End scene.  Classic.

Today I’m 38 and not much has changed! I’m always dreaming about what I want to be when I grow up.

A baseball game isn’t on the top of my list anymore, but you never know if that one will come back around.

More to come on that.

Anyway, my latest list of dream jobs:

A motivational speaker.

A real estate investor.

A food truck owner (“Beach Bites” has a nice ring to it, no?).

A dietitian to the stars.

An author.

Want me to keep going?

(Oh, and by the way, my sister is not a horse now, she’s a photographer. Didn’t want to leave you hanging there.)

I’ll tell you one thing though – When I grow up I want to be fit. And strong.  And healthy.

Someday, I want to cross the finish line at my 16th marathon (15 are in the books).  Remember that time I couldn’t run one block?

Yup that was me, this is me too.

The difference?

I had the courage to start. You have the courage to start.

Someday, I want to have stronger arms. Ones that won’t shake for hours after I’ve picked up something heavy.

Ones that will allow me to pick up something heavy. Period.

So I started doing pushups. They’re not pretty, but they’re pushups.  During commericals, at night, while I’m catching up and relaxing with my wife.

I started with max effort. 3 pushups every other day.

Today, I can do 20 without stopping.

Still not pretty, but I’m doing them. You can do them.

What do you want to be when you grow up?

What can you do today to get ready for it?

Someday, do you want to be 25 pounds lighter?

25 energy-draining, stamina-sucking pounds gone. A healthier, lighter, more energetic you left behind to explore.

What can you do today to get ready for it?

Someday, do you want to walk a mile and finish with more energy than when you started?

What can you do today to get ready for it?

It’s not rocket science people.

Have a dream.

Make a plan.

And Start.

(p.s. I can’t wait to see what you want to be when you grow up in the comments!)

Nice. I haven’t seen any of your blogs for a while. Do you have your 16th marathon scheduled? My son and some of his running club comrades are running in the Chicago Marathon… I believe it’s the first weekend in October.
