Ditch The Diet! Eat Right. Move More. Move On!
Congratulations on being the very first EAC Champion!!
November 2015 EAC Champion: Ada W of Tennessee, USA!
Heaviest Weight: 298lbs
Total Weight Loss (as of Nov 2015): 70lbs
Can you give us a peek into your life before you started on your path to a healthier, more energetic you? What was your diet like? Did you exercise at all?
My days consisted of pajamas, my couch and food. There was no exercise. I was depressed and had no energy. I was drinking 6-7 cans of soda every day! On pizza nights, I could easily eat 6 slices of pizza, 1/2 an order of cheese sticks, and some type of dessert with 2 cans of soda. That was normal to me! Fast food was eaten daily.
I’m curious about your weight history… did you always struggle with your weight?
No, I haven’t always been obese or even overweight. In high school, I was 124 pounds! After graduation, I started gaining weight. I got pregnant at 18 and my weight hit 209 pounds. I then got married and we had 3 more children. In 2013, I was 293 lbs. After giving birth to my son, I lost 42 pounds and eventually gained all of that back, reaching my heaviest weight of 298lbs in 2015. I saw that number and felt like a failure. I knew I had to change everything. I had used being pregnant and being a mom as an excuse to gain the weight, but realized I couldn’t use that excuse anymore!
Wow. So you were obviously feeling down about yourself, feeling like a failure as you said. What would you say was your motivation to change your path and get busy on this journey?
I wanted to be healthy and be active with my kids. I want to live my life! I was missing out on everything and I knew I had to change.
In 2014, we took our kids to a water park and I had to swim in shorts and a T-shirt because I was too embarrassed to wear a swim suit. I think it was more embarrassing to be the obese woman swimming in clothes! I was even too big to ride the water slides with them.
So what diet changes have you made since starting on this path? Did you start by making small changes or jump right into a full on diet?
I had to change everything! I started by giving up soda and only drinking water. Then I started counting my calories. Now, I eat 3 small meals and 2 snacks a day. I still eat pizza, but I only have it on special occasions and I have 2 slices instead of 6, veggies instead of cheese sticks and water instead of soda. It’s about moderation!
How about adding in some exercise, how did that come about?
I love being active now, but it was hard at first! I could only walk about a quarter of a mile and I could barely breathe. I just walked every day that I could and now I can walk up to 2 miles. I’m even jogging now! I can swing with my kids at the park and run after them. I feel amazing and have more energy!
What has this journey done for you so far? Would you say your recent successes have enhanced your life?
Losing weight and getting fit has improved everything about my life! I have gained confidence and I’m smiling more. I enjoy being active and I even enjoy exercise now. Making the decision to become healthy has been amazing! I’ve made friends on instagram that I love. We support each other and it’s like a family.
What inspires you to keep going? Do you have any quotes that you keep in mind or mantras you go by?
I have a lot of quotes that inspire me, but my biggest inspiration comes from my own progress! I look back at where I started and how far I’ve come. That pushes me to keep going!
Before you go, if you could leave a message for someone just starting out on their journey, or struggling through it, what would it be?
My message is to believe in yourself. You have to know that you can do it. You have to push yourself and love yourself. It’s all about balance and if you have a bad day, it’s ok!
Wow! Ada, congratulations again for being the very first EAC Champion!! Thank you for being an inspiration to all of us! I personally want to thank you for sharing your thoughts with my readers!
